Mordecai Historic Park, St. Mark's Chapel (photos)
St Mark's Chapel is a historic chapel moved to the grounds of Mordecai Historic Park. While its size and wood construction provide excellent acoustics for singing, it presents barriers for people with mobility challenges.
St Mark's Chapel is a historic chapel moved to the grounds of Mordecai Historic Park. While its size and wood construction provide excellent acoustics for singing, it presents barriers for people with mobility challenges.
- Parking: Parking is available on Cedar Street, about 100 feet from the Chapel. The Mordecai Visitor Center at the corner of Cedar St and Wake Forest Road has two handicapped parking spots. From there, the Chapel is about 125 feet away.
- Entrance: The park walkways are hand-laid brick and uneven in many places. There are 4 steps (7" high, 12" deep, with railing) to the entrance of the historic chapel, with another 3-inch step into the building. The chapel has double doors that are each 24 inches wide and bisected with a beam in the middle.
- Singing space: Long pews are rearranged into a hollow square for singing on the main level of the chapel. For chair users, there is very limited room to maneuver inside the chapel.
- Bathrooms: Several single-stall bathrooms (including two accessible bathrooms) are located in separate buildings on the property (80-100' from the chapel) and do not require stairs. The accessible bathrooms have an entry door at least 32" wide, interior space that is at least 56"x60", a toilet 17-19" high with grab bars alongside and behind, and a sink that is 34" high with knee room underneath.
Pullen Memorial Baptist Church
- Parking: Pullen has a couple of small parking lots and attendees may utilize street parking (see map). There are three accessible parking spaces in the parking lot near the accessible entrance outside of Finlator Hall, about 60' from the entrance. We can also reserve additional accessible spaces; please contact [email protected] if this would be helpful to you.
- Entrance: The entrance to Finlator Hall (where lunch takes place) is on the same level as the parking lot and is accessed via a paved walkway. The entrance to the chapel (where singing takes place) may be accessed via a ramp or stairs from Cox Ave., or by taking the elevator up from Finlator Hall to an outdoor breezeway (about 100' long) connecting to the chapel.
- Singing space: Individual chairs are arranged in a hollow square on the same level as the entrance and may be reconfigured as needed.
- Bathrooms: There is one accessible single-occupancy restroom in the chapel (where singing takes place), and two on the ground floor of Finlator Hall (where lunch takes place). All three are on the same level as the entrance, have an entry door at least 32" wide, interior space that is at least 56"x60", a toilet 17-19" high with grab bars alongside and behind, and a sink that is 34" high with knee room underneath.
Winston-Salem
St. Anne's Episcopal Church
We sing in the Fellowship Hall, accessible from the back parking lot of the church. There are two handicap parking spots in the back parking lot and a long concrete ramp to get to the back door (ascending the height of one flight of ~10 steps). The door threshold is the same level as the stair/ramp landing.
There is a short hallway between the exterior door and the Fellowship Hall, all on the same level. Accessible bathrooms are also available on the same level, on the far side of the Fellowship Hall. Occasionally the church leaves folding tables and chairs in the Fellowship Hall in a way that does not leave a large clear path -- we do our best to move these out of the way before a singing and are happy to adjust more in the moment if a wider path is needed.
